We have learned that two members of the Community Committee for the Purchase of Medical Equipment, who are also members of TMB, have been asked to stand as candidates for councillors on the future City Council. They will probably stand on the SLD list, and the decision was determined not so much by their political views and convictions as by the effectiveness of these people’s selfless efforts.
Mgr inż. Edward Burniak and Wacław Wawrzkiewicz, whom we mean, are the main initiators—alongside Feliks Gogol—of the fundraising campaign to purchase a cardiac ultrasound machine. It was the persistence and consistent efforts of Burniak and Wawrzkiewicz that enabled the hospital to receive equipment and devices needed by patients, worth more than PLN 700 million.
With full conviction of these people’s usefulness to the city’s affairs, we present our members’ profiles to our Readers.
Mgr inż. Edward Burniak
He is 55 years old and a retired miner. He came to Bolesławiec in April 1946. There he completed the Mining Technical School and then studied at the Silesian University of Technology in the Faculty of Mining. After graduating, he worked for three years at “Surmina”, and spent the remainder of his career before retirement at the “Konrad” Mining Works. He served as a senior shift supervisor, works manager and mine manager.
Outside his professional work, he actively pursued music (the once-famous BRACIA BURNIAKÓW orchestra, and later as the well-known leader of the mining street band BOLUSIE). He was one of the initiators of the DAR SERCA campaign and is one of TMB’s selfless and active members. Practical, inventive and decisive in action.
Asked about possible plans connected with the function of city councillor, mgr inż. Edward Burniak said: I would like to help accomplish several things in the city:
- to ensure that Bolesławiec residents have work (including municipal works for the people of Bolesławiec, reactivating the municipal construction company, preference for Bolesławiec companies in tenders for works, etc.),
- to give local television greater reach and the local press the status and role it deserves,
- to launch the second-level music school as soon as possible,
- to provide the city with a bypass eliminating the passage of thousands of cars through the city.
Mgr inż. Edward Burniak does not belong to any political party or political grouping. Recommended as a candidate for councillor by the Trade Union of Copper Industry Workers.
Wacław Wawrzkiewicz
He is 47 years old and has been associated with Bolesławiec for 30 years. He is a mechanical engineering technician by education. From the first days of his career, he was associated with the “Konrad” Mining Works. He began working as a mechanic and ended his career as a senior machinery shift supervisor.
As a resident of Osiedle Kwiatowe, he was one of the initiators of developing the area and organizing recreational and sports facilities on the estate (a football pitch, basketball court, swings and playground). Together with fellow retired miners, he initiated a fundraising campaign to purchase a cardiac ultrasound machine. His colleagues entrusted him with the role of Chairman of the Community Committee for the Purchase of Medical Equipment for the Hospital. To workplaces, offices, insurance companies, schools and heads of trading companies, he became known as a tenacious man who persistently sought funds for this humanitarian purpose.
If the city’s residents voted for Wacław Wawrzkiewicz, as a councillor he would mainly seek to resolve the following matters:
- the gradual elimination in his estate (as well as in other estates, especially those located in the western and northern parts of the city) of coal heating in favour of gas heating, in order to eliminate environmental pollution harmful to the renovated city centre,
- by, among other things, creating new jobs and favouring Bolesławiec companies in tenders for works, striving to reduce the number of unemployed in the city,
- launching the second-level music school as soon as possible through joint action by the Municipal Office, Municipal Offices, workplaces and the military,
- increasing the reach of local television and bringing about the “normal” operation of the local press (weekly publications).
Wacław Wawrzkiewicz does not belong to any political party or political grouping. Recommended as a candidate for councillor by the Trade Union of Copper Industry Workers.
