AT HOME (continued)
To avoid or minimize the risk, follow the advice below:
remember:
-do not talk about your possessions; avoid publicizing your income, investment plans or planned purchases—especially in the presence of strangers and children;
-do not let strangers into your home if their visit is not justified;
-if you are not sure who the person visiting you is, leave them outside the door;
- never use the intercom to open the door to strangers. Instill this rule in your children and neighbors;
- in buildings equipped with an intercom, always lock the entrance door to the stairwell. Teach your children to do the same;
- never leave the door to your apartment open, even when you are only stepping out for a moment, e.g. to take out the trash or collect mail from the mailbox, etc.
BEFORE OPENING THE DOOR TO A STRANGER
- look through the peephole or out the window. See who it is;
- if you do not know the visitor, ask the purpose of their visit or ask them to show identification. Check the document carefully. A person with honest intentions should not be offended;
-if the visitor becomes pushy, call the police or alert those around you. Try to remember as many details as possible, e.g. the stranger’s appearance, the number plate and make of the car they may have arrived in, etc.
-if you decide to open the door, put the security chain on first!
REMEMBER THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS, BECAUSE NOT EVERYONE WHO KNOCKS ON YOUR DOOR MAY HAVE HONEST INTENTIONS.
