In the picturesque town of SOEST in Westphalia, the 26th International Ceramics Symposium was held from 4 to 10 October this year. Around 100 participants from eight countries, mainly Germany, attended the conference. Among the renowned experts in ceramics who came to Soest were, among others, Prof. Splinder from the University of Insburcku, Prof. Reichstein from Schleswig, Dr Kybalowa from Prague, Dr Oserey from Budapest, Dr Bolliger from Zurich and Dr Smeele from Rotterdam. Poland was represented at the symposium by Bożena Kantek, MA, from the Museum of Ceramics in Bolesławiec, who delivered a paper on THE ART DECO PERIOD IN SILESIAN CERAMICS. The symposium was organised by the Arbeitskreis fur Keramikforschung Foundation in Regensburg and the Westfalisches Museum rur Archaologie in Munster. The proceedings were overseen by Dr Werner Endres, a renowned organiser of annual meetings of ceramics specialists. The symposium took place in the Blue Hall of the historic town hall in Soest, where papers on archaeology, art history and ethnography were delivered over three days. Excursions around Westphalia were organised on the remaining days. The rich collections from the sphere of the Weser culture gathered at Brake Castle near the town of Lemgo were particularly noteworthy. The tour also included technological monuments associated with pottery. The meetings of the conference participants also resulted in closer contacts between scholars from different countries. It is worth noting with satisfaction the strengthening of contacts between Innsbruck and Bolesławiec. In December 1993, a jubilee exhibition will be organised to mark the centenary of the establishment of Julius Paula und Sohn in Bolesławiec. Prof. Splinder from Innsbruck undertook to have the catalogue printed in Austria and to lend part of his collections for the exhibition. In summer 1994, a group of archaeology students from the University of Innsbruck will arrive.
