During the summer, after many weeks of hard work in Germany, a resident of one of the villages near Bolesławiec was returning home with a substantial amount of cash. He could already see the lights of his beloved family home and was looking forward to meeting his loved ones, for whom he was bringing gifts. A few hours earlier, someone else had bought a car and, after thoroughly celebrating the purchase, was driving with his drunk friends toward the oncoming car from Germany. The drunk driver lost control of the vehicle on a bend, and a head-on collision occurred. Several people needlessly lost their lives, and instead of a joyful reunion, despair and mourning came to the home. But this is not the end of this true story. While the accident victims were being recovered and the injured rescued, there were people (or perhaps just one person) who took advantage of the opportunity to plunder the vehicle and, like hyenas, rob the possessions of the man returning from Germany, depriving his family even of material consolation in this tragedy. This is what we have come to. And, incidentally, here are some grim figures obtained from police records. In 1992, 419 incidents occurred in the area served by the Bolesławiec police, including 81 road accidents and 338 collisions. Seventeen people died and 107 were injured. That was in 1992, but during the first nine months of 1993, that is, through September, as many as 437 incidents occurred, including 376 collisions and 53 accidents. Thirteen people died and 60 were injured. It is frightening to think what will happen during the autumn and winter months... People, let us come to our senses! One can never be too careful, and let the figures listed above and this tragic story serve as a warning.
