We feared that we would not manage to purchase the cardiac ultrasound machine before the new tax (VAT) came into effect. Had that actually happened, achieving the goal would have been postponed indefinitely, because the cost of the machine is now more than one hundred million zlotys higher.
The Social Committee for the Purchase of the Ultrasound Machine sent dramatic appeals to those companies, plants and institutions that had not previously contributed their share, while simultaneously striving to purchase the device before 5 July by paying an advance of two-thirds of the required amount to the appropriate company importing such equipment. The Social Committee’s appeal received a very generous response from the Bonitex Technical Fabrics Plant, which paid 50 million zlotys. Substantial sums were also paid into the ultrasound account by the Osiecznica Municipal Office, PKO (Head Office in Warsaw), the Osiecznica Sand Mine and Processing Plant, Głogowski Bank Gospodarczy and Bank Spółdzielczy in Bolesławiec, PZU (the reliable Mr R. Rejwerski), the Ceramika Artystyczna Cooperative (for the second time), PHU AMAL from Trzebień, the Adrian Tours Travel Agency, and employees of the Municipal Communal Management Plant. Large sums came from the Priests–Police Officers match and the Bankers–Doctors match, as well as from PSS Społem. Individual contributions were also made. The Heart Ultrasound account was supported by: P.I. Gorczyńscy, E. Grabas, M. Smagacz, R. Górny, A. Woźniak, E. Sokołowska, P. Sokołowski, L. Butal, M. Makarewicz, T. Bartz, T. Mikołajewicz, S. Wegrzanowska, R. Makarewicz, I. Werla, L. Słocka, M. Mirek, J. Buczkowski, Z. Przyłucki and the Gąsiorowski family.
Those named above, together with those mentioned in previous issues of Głos Bolesławca, brought the account balance on 1 July 1993 to more than 540 million zlotys. This made it possible to purchase the basic device—an ultrasound machine with Doppler—and donate it to the hospital in Bolesławiec. Thus, Dear Readers, residents of the town and surrounding area, together we have accomplished a great humanitarian deed by purchasing a machine that the town could not have afforded for a long time, and which will certainly save more than one human life and make it possible to avoid pain when examining sick people.
The members of the Social Committee for the Purchase of the Ultrasound Machine, the editorial staff of Głos Bolesławca and the TMB Board sincerely thank you for your Good Hearts, Kindness and Generosity. Above all, however, the Hospital, the ZOZ management and the sick people extend their respect and gratitude to everyone. We would also like to thank SOWAMED for importing the device on time and for placing its trust in us. The campaign is not yet over, however. Additional components still need to be purchased, for which funds ran out—such as a transducer—which will allow the machine to be used, for example, for surgical purposes.
We therefore appeal once again, especially to those who were not convinced by this noble campaign or delayed making a contribution: do not hesitate to give whatever heartfelt donation you can afford. Perhaps this medical device will one day help you too.
THE LIST OF DONORS IS STILL OPEN, and we will return to matters connected with this device.
