Two months ago, in the article “Death Can Be Prevented,” we wrote that a great many people who were still relatively young were dying, and that every second death was the result of a heart attack or coronary disease.
Death really can be prevented by detecting heart defects or changes in the coronary vessels earlier, using a routine device called an ULTRASOUND DOPPLER SCANNER, or USG for short. A Social Committee for the Purchase of a Cardiac Ultrasound Scanner was established at TMB, bringing together people who had suffered heart attacks as well as those who recognized the need to purchase this device for the hospital in Bolesławiec as an important matter. These people are selflessly visiting workplaces, wholesalers, shops, institutions and schools, persuading them of the need to purchase this expensive device through joint efforts, because there is no point counting on money from the national or municipal budget, and life is not all that long after all.
We promised our Readers that we would regularly report on how this humanitarian campaign was progressing, and we want to keep our word. The first reflection is this: people, although harassed by taxes, price increases and various charitable campaigns (“everywhere it is just give and give”), are exceptionally patient, understanding and kind-hearted. Some contribute smaller amounts, others larger ones—but it rarely happens that anyone takes a firmly negative stance. And now for some specific examples: the pupils, management and teaching staff of Primary School No. 4 collected 1,086,400 złoty for the USG within their own community! School No. 4 also appeals to all other primary and secondary schools: try to collect at least as much as we did!
The employees of Bank Zachodni also collected a somewhat larger amount among themselves.
Collections among work crews were also organized by the Bolesławiec branch of PKO and the Social Affairs Department of the Municipal Office, with very good results. We have heard that collections are under way at other workplaces and institutions that cannot transfer so-called official funds.

Until the next update!
