The most common propaganda slogan today is the need to “take matters into one’s own hands.” This is the best shorthand definition of self-government. Somehow, so far, we have not been fortunate enough for this useful activity to reach the consciousness of the people of our town on a broader scale.
But something is beginning to happen. The economic crisis and financial difficulties of the “Bolesławianka” Housing Cooperative, for example, prevent painting work from being carried out on time in the housing estates. Many residents who want to live in aesthetically pleasing stairwells ask the Cooperative for paint, and take care of the rest themselves. They form small stairwell self-government groups and paint. And once the stairwell has been renovated, they continue this useful activity outside the building. Flower boxes, flowerbeds and lawns are being created jointly by children, parents and grandparents. This can be observed in the housing estates around Staszica, Starzyńskiego and Broniewskiego Streets. From there, everything depends on whether this enthusiasm was a one-time effort or will become a lasting habit among the residents. One more observation, by the way. It often happens that these renovated stairwells and landscaped flowerbeds are damaged by children and young people, as well as by unattended pets. What a shame.
Small-Scale Self-Government
