The OSP Nowogrodziec unit was established in September 1946, as one of the first in Bolesławiec County. Its founding members were: Józef Małek, Jan Myszka, Henryk Nowakowski, Edward Rogowski, Izydor Szabla and Władysław Wróbel. Edward Rogowski, the town’s mayor at the time, was elected the first president, while the chief was the craftsman Władysław Wróbel. At that time, the unit had 15 members and was equipped with: a hand-operated pump, 120 linear metres of delivery hoses, 5 linear metres of suction hoses, post-war helmets and military uniforms.
In 1950, OSP received its first N-200 “Scamel” motor pump, and in 1951 a vehicle with a wooden body covered with roofing felt, of the “OPRL” make.
In 1952, the first women’s firefighting team was established. In 1954, a brass fire brigade band was formed at the unit; it remains active to this day, and its first bandmaster was Edward Kowalski.
In 1956, the unit received a “Star” flatbed truck, and in 1961 a “Star-20” fire engine and an OKW M-800 motor pump, later replaced with a “Leopolia M-800” motor pump.
At that time, as well as today, the unit actively participated in combating fires in the Bolesławiec area. In recognition of its merits, in 1971 the County Fire Service Command provided the unit with a “Star-25” Jelcz fire engine. A turning point in the unit’s history was 1987. That year, a new OSP fire station, together with workshop, storage and cultural facilities, was put into use.
Today, OSP Nowogrodziec is an S-2-type unit, equipped with “Star-244 GBM” and “Star-266 GBM” fire engines and the necessary auxiliary equipment. A workshop operates using the existing facilities.
In 1992, OSP Nowogrodziec took second place in the Voivodeship Sports and Firefighting Championships in Cieplice. In 1993, it took part in a zonal competition in Zgieszowice near Opole as part of the qualifiers for the Polish Championships.
From 1 January 1995, OSP Nowogrodziec was incorporated into the national Rescue and Firefighting System.
At present, OSP Nowogrodziec has 39 active members, 2 supporting members, 20 honorary members and 12 members of the Youth Fire Brigade.
The current president of the unit is Dh Ryszard Kalus, while its chief since 1975 has been Dh Jan Skiba.
