The Polish Pope has finally got "his own" street in Bolesławiec. At the request of residents of the Piastów Housing Estate (several hundred signatures collected on lists), the City Council adopted a resolution at its April session to rename Władysław Broniewski Street as Jana Pawła II Street.
It seemed that, after the first turbulent term of the local government, we had already put this stage of settling scores behind us. The new patron deserves respect and acceptance, but why make the change at the expense of another notable figure—after all, a recognized poet? In Bolesławiec, the oldest and most distinguished secondary school in the city, Liceum Ogólnokształcące Nr 1, bears his name, and this does not bother either the students or the teaching staff. As a historical curiosity, I will mention that the banner for the secondary school (the second in the history of educational institutions in the former Bolesławiec County, after Primary School Nr 4) was embroidered by nuns from the local convent.
