In one of last year's issues of GB, on the sports page, I published a short question: is sport needed in Bolesławiec? – together with a presentation of the state of affairs in this field. I hoped the subject would be taken up. And what happened? Nothing—not a single voice on the matter. Why? Does nobody care! Does no one have an opinion on this subject? Do people involved in sport have nothing to say?
Isn't the growing demand for sport visible? Isn't it high time to take a closer look at the problem? Shouldn't the number of playing fields with goals, hoops, nets, etc., and the number of sports and recreational events be increased? Are two physical-education lessons at school enough?
Does nobody see that young people deprived of broad access to sports halls, playing fields and organised sport direct their energy towards the streets, aggression and other people?
Why do young people drink, smoke, take drugs and die despite their young age? Does it have to be this way? Why do most children have poor posture?
Would allocating more funds to sport not resolve several of the issues mentioned above? Why is it now so difficult to be a coach or a sports activist (mostly a volunteer)? Aren't the city's subsidies, after all funded by taxpayers' money, too small? Why are such small sums, amounting to less than 1% of the budget, paid out only in May? The sporting activities of clubs organised within sports federations continue from the beginning of the year. Does nobody care how to fill this gap? Why are there no sports representatives among the councillors? Decisions are made about us without us. Why was there not a single person from the city authorities at the general meeting of Bolesławiec's oldest club, celebrating its 40th anniversary? Will nobody be held responsible when, one day—already in the not-too-distant future—club sport in Bolesławiec disappears from the scene? Why? Endless questions, perhaps put together chaotically, but presenting only an outline of the problems connected with sport. Will someone now answer me why it has to be this way?
Plebiscite
The deadline for submitting candidates for the 1995 plebiscite for the most popular sportsperson and coach of the year has passed. To those who voted, thank you; the results will be published in the April issue of GB.
