On Saturday, 8 March 1997, at 1:00 p.m., a ceremonial inauguration of the 1997/98 academic year of the Technical University headquartered in Głogów was held in the Forum hall. Sixty first-year students received their student record books from the university rector, Professor Wojciech Zamojski, PhD, DSc, Eng., and the chancellor, Józef Dulas.
Representatives of the provincial and municipal authorities—Roman Piotr, Hubert Prabucki, Władysław Zuziak—and a large group of city councillors attended the ceremony. When extending their congratulations to the University Senate, they assured it that the Bolesławiec branch would receive care and support.
The Technical University is located in Głogów (Legnica Province). It is a private institution established three years ago. It currently educates approximately 800 people (it began with 70 students) and offers four programmes:
- software systems,
- computer systems and networks,
- computer systems for administration and management,
- computer systems for telecommunications.
The monthly tuition fee is PLN 250.00 (for the entire year). The branch will be located at the Complex of Electronic Schools. Classes will be held on Saturdays and Sundays, with a programme in computer engineering (it is the only technical university in Jelenia Góra Province). The school has excellent computer facilities and is connected to the Internet. The establishment of the Technical University branch is thanks to the director of the Complex of Electronic Schools, Andrzej Rudziński, who will manage the branch’s operations.
The ceremony had a full academic setting—the Senate appeared in ermine robes with the insignia of university authority. For many city residents who attended the ceremony, it was a beautiful experience. On the margins of the ceremony, two observations:
- this was the second inauguration of a higher-education institution in Bolesławiec; the first took place in October 1992, when, in a ceremony attended by representatives of the city and university authorities, the College of Polish Philology was opened at Secondary School No. 2 as a branch of the Higher School of Education in Zielona Góra (for historical accuracy, since the College no longer exists);
- the second reflection is somewhat sadder: the beautiful Bacalarus choir from Złotoryja was specially brought to the ceremony and sang “Gaudeamus igitur” and “Gaudeamus Poloniae” (there is no choir in Bolesławiec). Where are the beautiful days when these songs were performed by choirs in Bolesławiec—the Canon choir from Secondary School No. 1 and the choir of the former Teacher Training College?
