Emilia, a student at Gimnazjum w Nowogrodźcu, was diagnosed with cancer at the end of last year. At present, neither the students nor the teachers at the Nowogrodziec school have contact with the girl. She cannot meet with others. She is undergoing chemotherapy. Nevertheless, as Alicja Krawczyk, the school student council supervisor and initiator of the charity campaign, points out, “from what Emilia’s mother told me, the prognosis is good.”
Alicja speaks unpretentiously about the idea of organizing the event: “We simply decided to help.” This help is also important because the sick girl’s family is not well-off. And in the case of cancer, every sum can be useful. “I hope we will manage to raise an amount that will help with Emilia’s treatment. Every zloty will certainly be used appropriately,” assures Alicja Krawczyk.
Many people have joined the charity campaign for the girl, including students from Gimnazjum w Nowogrodźcu. “She is our friend. It could happen to any of us,” explains Magda Szymula, a middle school student. “We knew Emilia by sight. We were on friendly terms. Like with everyone at our school,” adds Adrianna Trębacz, a student at the Nowogrodziec middle school. Both girls have become deeply involved in the campaign to save Emilia. “Everyone wants to help her,” they insist.
Since Monday, the school has been selling donation bricks and homemade baked goods. “Everyone can try cake baked by the headmistress or by the chemistry teacher,” Alicja Krawczyk says with a smile. In addition, a carnival ball for Emilia will be organized at the middle school. “We managed to collect quite a lot of money during the meeting with parents,” Alicja adds. The parish priest has also promised support.
The charity effort will culminate in a concert to be held on February 3 at the Firefighters’ House in Nowogrodziec. Several local bands will perform that evening. The concert’s biggest star will be the excellent group The Twisters, well known not only to residents of Bolesławiec. Fans of somewhat different sounds will also find something for themselves. Between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., they will be able to enjoy a disco at the Firefighters’ House hosted by DJs from Party radio. All proceeds will go toward Emilia’s treatment. All the performers have waived their fees.
Furthermore, an auction of works painted by the school’s students will be held during the February concert. There will also be a raffle. So far, the organizers have collected 300 prizes from companies and private individuals. An account will soon be opened to which money for the sick girl’s treatment can be donated. “Let us hope that Emilia will return to us soon,” says Alicja Krawczyk.
