Krystyna Szwajkowska was the only Polish competitor to take part in the international racketlon tournament. The TOP athlete faced her longtime rivals from the world’s elite in Fürth. In the semifinal, she defeated Germany’s Irena Seifert, ranked ninth in the world.
Krystyna’s very strong performance in table tennis deserves special mention. The athlete from Bolesławiec defeated her opponent in the latter’s signature discipline (21:19). It was easier from then on: 21:3 in badminton and 21:13 in squash. After three disciplines, our representative had built a 27-point lead. The tennis match (13:21) no longer had much bearing on the outcome.
The final against Germany’s Silke Altman, ranked fourth in the world, kept all the spectators on edge. After the first two events, our athlete was leading (table tennis 21:17, badminton 21:7). A major upset seemed likely. The German crowd fell silent. Nevertheless, squash improved the German athlete’s chances (6:21). After three disciplines, the match had practically started from scratch. The tennis match was to decide the result. Cheered on and applauded by an international audience, the two women fought out a spectacular contest, which ended 17:21. This gave Silke Altman a one-point advantage and victory in the entire tournament.
This Friday, Krystyna Szwajkowska will compete in the World Doubles Racketlon Championships taking place in Vienna. She will play mixed doubles with Jacek Szubert from Bolesławiec and women’s doubles with Agata Doroszkiewicz from Gdańsk.
