During the party, an argument and a physical altercation allegedly occurred between approximately 40-year-old Tomasz Ch. and his younger common-law wife. The woman, bearing numerous signs of assault, ended up in the stairwell. Paramedics tried to resuscitate her. Unsuccessfully. The victim died as a result of her injuries.

The autopsy showed that the victim had suffered abdominal injuries. “Her common-law husband will hear charges today concerning the infliction of serious bodily injury resulting in death,” says Marcin Piekarski, the district prosecutor in Lwówek Śląski. Preliminary findings by experts indicate that the perpetrator may in fact have delivered one stronger blow. And that the woman would have survived if she had received help a little earlier.

What is more, the suspect was well known to the police. For some time, he had been abusing his common-law wife. (A post on the Lwówek forum said that half the town knew about it.) Yet each time, the woman refused to file any report.

On Saturday, October 8, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Lwówek Śląski will apply for Ch.’s temporary detention. He could face up to 12 years in prison for an assault resulting in death.
