The incident took place on the night of August 21–22, 1993, near the village of Zbylutów in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. The perpetrator turned out to be 19-year-old Jan G., a resident of a nearby village, while the victim was a young woman he met by chance. G. was arrested 22 years after the incident. Questioned as a suspect, he admitted raping Ewa P. and gave an explanation.
At the district prosecutor’s request, on November 4, 2015, the local District Court ordered pretrial detention for the suspect accused of raping and killing Ewa P. The measure was subsequently extended three times by decision of the District Court in Jelenia Góra.
During the investigation, Jan G. underwent examinations by court-appointed psychiatrists, who determined that at the time of the alleged offense he had full capacity to understand its significance and control his conduct. The man had a criminal record. The District Court in Jelenia Góra scheduled the trial for September 12, 2016.
