Police officers remind us that, to ensure a safe leisure experience, it is enough to follow a few basic rules and use common sense:

  • the safest option is to use supervised swimming areas. Under no circumstances should you swim in prohibited areas
  • children should use swimming areas only under adult supervision. It is essential to keep a constant eye on young children and remind them of the rules for staying safely by the water, because sometimes only a brief moment is enough for tragedy to occur
  • when using watercraft, remember that they should be in good working order and certified, and that the people on board should wear special life jackets. This is particularly important for people who swim poorly or cannot swim at all
  • alcohol should not be abused while relaxing by the water, and after drinking it, remember that you should not swim or use watercraft in such a state. Alcohol impairs the assessment of one’s own swimming abilities and encourages recklessness; it also increases the likelihood of thermal shock and weakens the body.

Police officers also warn against diving headfirst into shallow water with an unexplored bottom—a jump like this may result in spinal injury and disability. It is also worth noting that statistics show that between June and August 2015, 23 people unfortunately drowned for various reasons in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
