This year’s edition of the Bolesławiec Yearbook contains 208 pages. It includes 51 articles on a wide range of subjects, as well as a chronicle (compiled by Edmund Maliński and Magdalena Zientara) containing brief information about the most important sporting, cultural, political and other events that took place during the past year in the town and Bolesławiec County, or in which the people of Bolesławiec participated.

The History of Bolesławiec

Section I contains articles resulting from research into the history of Bolesławiec. It includes an excerpt from Stanisław Ratajski’s master’s thesis entitled “Identity and Social Memory of People Displaced from the Eastern Borderlands of the Second Polish Republic to Bolesławiec,” which received an award in the latest edition of the competition for the best master’s or doctoral thesis on the history and present of Bolesławiec; an extensive text by Michał Sibilski devoted to the history of the Bolesławiec railway; and Agata Bojanowska’s article entitled “The Municipal Cemetery on Śluzowa Street in Bolesławiec (the so-called New Evangelical Cemetery).”

Local Topics

Among the articles on local subjects included in Section II is Maria Adydan’s text entitled “The Vacuum Equipment Plant in Bolesławiec,” describing the plant’s history, production range and specific character. This section also includes an excerpt from Bartosz Woźniewski’s master’s thesis entitled “The Development Concept for the Area of Bolesławiec East Railway Station,” which received an award in 2014 in the competition for the best master’s or doctoral thesis on the history and present of Bolesławiec. It also contains Zygmunt Brusiło’s article “50 Years of the Construction Schools Complex in Bolesławiec” and Danuta Maślicka’s article about a meeting with Rev. Prof. Józef Tischner, held in Bolesławiec on 20 February 1997. Barbara Glinkowska presented the work of Janina Bana-Kozłowska through the prism of two important distinctions received by the well-known Bolesławiec artist in 2015. The chapter concludes with Ewa Ołenicz-Bernacka’s interview with Adam Baniecki, head of the State Archives in Wrocław, Bolesławiec Branch.

Announcements

Section III—“Announcements”—is one of the most extensive and contains as many as 11 articles. In the first, Lesław Kasprzycki presented information about the Bolesławiec–Złotoryja Television Tournament of Towns held in 1969. The next two concern the activities of Bolesławiec residents in the Eastern Borderlands. Bogdan Mazurkiewicz describes last year’s “Save the Great-Grandfather’s Grave from Oblivion” campaign, while Barbara Smoleńska discusses participation in the unveiling of the restored monument to Adam Mickiewicz in Zbarazh. Zbigniew Razik summarised the celebrations marking the 35th anniversary of NSZZ Solidarność in Bolesławiec, and Olga Markiewicz discussed the 5th National Convention of Directors of Schools and Institutions and Presidents of Associations named in commemoration of those deported to Siberia. The chapter also includes Maria Szpak’s article “The Bolesławiec Council for Senior Citizens of the Second Term (2013–2015),” Eugenia Alina Wolska’s “Neuer Chor Dresden in Bolesławiec,” and Krzysztof Rajczakowski’s “NavSim Polska—World Technologies from Bolesławiec.” In the next text, Agnieszka Gergont discussed the most important investments and awards granted to the town during the past year. This section is supplemented by articles from Anna Bober-Tubaj and Agata Bojanowska recalling historical information about revitalised sites—the water reservoir on Jeleniogórska Street and the Therms building.

The Work of Bolesławiec Artists

The section “The Work of Bolesławiec Artists” presents the activities of two artists: the late ceramic artist Eugeniusz Niemirowski (in an article by Lesław Kasprzycki) and photographer Janusz Moniatowicz, whose work and life are presented in an interview with Ewa Ołenicz-Bernacka (Part I of the interview was published in the 2014 Bolesławiec Yearbook).

The Bolesławiec residents whose memoirs were published include education worker Władysław Smoliński (compiled by Ewa Ołenicz-Bernacka), copper-mining specialist Jan Paździora, and Wojciech Sobiech, who describes the activities of the “Gronik” Mountain Club. The following people spoke about their passions: Antonina Kopała-Wdowiak (restaurateur, compiled by Danuta Maślicka), Rafał Kotlarski (president of the Wędrowiec Association), and Zdzisława Pachom (senior swimmer).

In Memoriam

The “In Memoriam” section presents profiles of well-known Bolesławiec residents who died in 2015. They included Jan Bancewicz (compiled by Agata Bojanowska), Michał Wojdyła (compiled by Stanisława Zięcik), Andrzej Idzik (compiled by Katarzyna Żak), Mieczysław Kozłowski (compiled by Anna Bober-Tubaj), Lucjan Rewers (compiled by Agata Bojanowska), Paweł Jamróz (compiled by Zbigniew Razik), Leszek Brocławik (compiled by Zbigniew Razik), Mieczysław Karol (compiled by Franciszek Kozdra), and Alojzy Skóra (compiled by Zbigniew Razik). The chapter also includes the texts “Arkadiusz Tobolski (1902–1977)—The Man Who Drained the Konrad Mine” (compiled by Jan Paździora) and “Doctor Roman Kowal (1934–1990), Honoured Citizen of Bolesławiec” (compiled by Maria Sobolska).

This year’s edition of the Yearbook also contains 12 reviews of publications written by Bolesławiec residents or concerning local topics, published in 2015. The “Bolesławiec Yearbook” has been published since 2009. The publication’s academic reviewer is Prof. Grzegorz Strauchold. Thirty-five people contributed to this year’s edition. The publication, issued by the Museum of Ceramics, was financed by the Municipality of Bolesławiec and the Ziemia Bolesławiecka Association. The “Bolesławiec Yearbook 2015” will be available for purchase at both Museum of Ceramics branches, the Tourist and Cultural Information Centre, and bookshops in Bolesławiec.
