The tragedy occurred on Monday (30 May) at the 34th kilometre of the A4 motorway (near Kierżno – Nowogrodziec municipality). At around 4:30 a.m., a truck driver stopped in the emergency lane in the direction of Zgorzelec. The man wanted to change a wheel. A road service crew was also helping the truck driver.
At one point, a silo carrying several tonnes of cement struck the road service vehicle and the stationary truck. The silo then hit the truck driver, who was near his vehicle. The truck driver, a 48-year-old resident of the Greater Poland Voivodeship, died at the scene. The silo left the motorway and overturned. The 25-year-old driver, a resident of Warsaw, was trapped in the cab. Firefighters had to use specialist equipment to free him. The man was taken to hospital.
Traffic on the A4 motorway towards Zgorzelec is obstructed and is moving along one lane.
