As reported by Helena Olszewska, deputy director of the Health and Social Affairs Department of the Municipal Office, the distribution of the “Life Boxes” was handled, among others, by the Municipal Social Welfare Centre, the Polish Association of the Blind, the Polish Teachers’ Union, the Association of Pensioners, Retirees and the Disabled, Universities of the Third Age and Caritas. Local media also took part: Lca.pl, Radio Plus and “Gazeta Wrocławska”. The boxes were distributed, among other occasions, during the Health Academy event organized with Panorama Legnicka at the Kopernik Cultural Centre. Many people collected them in person at the Municipal Office.
“People praise this idea very highly,” says Helena Olszewska. “These little red boxes, containing valuable information, increase their sense of security.”
The “Life Box” contains a form informing the doctor or paramedic called to the scene about the illnesses we have, when and in what doses we take our medication, as well as how to notify relatives or friends, whom to entrust with, for example, our pet if we are taken to hospital, and what to do with the keys.
The city prepared three thousand red boxes and the same number of magnets and information cards. The magnets should be placed in a visible spot on the refrigerator so that the person helping us knows that such a box containing a complete set of information about us is inside. Why the refrigerator? It is in every home and easy to find.
The box can save the life of anyone who, when an ambulance arrives, is unable to provide basic information about their illness, allergies or medications. For paramedics and those calling for help, it will be truly invaluable.
