The first meeting, resumed after several years, will feature reporter Mariusz Szczygieł, who has been associated with “Gazeta Wyborcza” since 1990. He is the author of bestselling books published in thirteen countries, including “Gottland” and “Make Yourself a Paradise”.
The meeting will be hosted by Danuta Maślicka, who ran the “Those Worth Getting to Know” series at the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre from 1997 to 2001. Guests included Stanisław Borowski, Rev. Józef Tischner, Ryszard Kapuściński, Maria Szyszkowska, Krzysztof Zanussi and Ryszard Gruchawka.
Mariusz Szczygieł is the author of books translated into several languages: “The Sunday That Happened on Wednesday” (1996, 2010), “Gottland” (2006, 2010), “20 Years of the New Poland” (a reportage anthology) (2009, 2011), “Kaprysik: Women’s Stories” (2010), “Make Yourself a Paradise” (2010), and “Láska nebeská” (2012).
He received the European Book Prize (the European Union award for the best European book of the year) for “Gottland”, as well as the 2007 Nike Readers’ Prize. For the reportage “Śliczny i posłuszny” in “Duży Format”, he received the 2013 Andrzej Woyciechowski Award and the 2013 Mediator Award. He was named Journalist of the Year 2013, taking first place in the Grand Press competition. He is also the author of the anthology of Polish reportage after 1989, “20 Years of the New Poland in Reportages According to Mariusz Szczygieł”, and the two-volume anthology of Polish reportage “100/XX”.
