A resident of Gmina Bolesławiec called the editorial office and informed us that a monument had disappeared from Kruszyn (more precisely, “from the historic oak avenue”), where it had stood since Napoleonic times. And he asked: – Why is the historic oak avenue being ruined?
We asked municipal officials for comment. Waldemar Danielewicz, head of the Investments and Infrastructure Department at the Bolesławiec Municipal Office:
Due to suspicions that the remains of soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars were located beneath the monument in Kruszyn, the Lower Silesian Voivode issued a decision authorizing the Council for the Protection of Memory of Combat and Martyrdom to carry out the exhumation of a mass grave of Russian soldiers. The remains were to be buried at the Kutuzov Cemetery of Red Army Soldiers in Bolesławiec, while the artifacts found were to be handed over to the Museum of Ceramics in Bolesławiec.
He added:
During exhumation work carried out in late autumn last year, no soldiers’ remains were found. The site was leveled, and the artifacts were most likely handed over to the Museum of Ceramics.
What is more, several people from Kruszyn told us that the monument mentioned by the reader had not been there for quite some time.
Attention! If anyone has a photograph showing the monument in question, please post it in the comments below this article.
