Let us warn our loved ones. Let us not be scammed. Increasingly often, scammers impersonate, for example, police officers in order to appear more credible. Remember! Police officers never ask people to hand money over to strangers. Let us be cautious.
Last Friday, police officers from Zgorzelec and Bogatynia received many reports from residents about numerous attempted scams by people posing as relatives. Potential victims, aged between 62 and 86, received calls from alleged relatives asking for urgent financial assistance. In one case, the fake relative had caused a road accident; in another, they allegedly had to take part in a police operation. Or, finally, the money was supposedly needed for other urgent purposes.
The scammers were sorely disappointed. All the residents sensed that something was wrong and did not hand any money over to strangers. The seniors consistently stressed that they had already been warned about this type of scam many times—whether through the mass media, by community police officers, and above all by members of their families.
Senior citizens, remember the four rules for staying safe in Lower Silesia:
- never hand your money to a stranger
- never call numbers provided by the caller
- call your loved ones and ask whether they really need help
- immediately inform the police about any attempted fraud.
