Officers from the Traffic Department of the Jelenia Góra Municipal Police Headquarters detained, after a chase, an 18-year-old resident of Mysłakowice municipality suspected, among other things, of robbery with a dangerous weapon and causing a fatal accident.

The incident occurred on January 28 this year at around 8:00 p.m. in Jelenia Góra, in one of the parking lots. The 18-year-old got into the injured woman’s car, threatened her with a piece of glass, and then demanded that she drive him out of the city. Fearing for her own life and health, the woman followed the attacker’s orders. On Zgorzelecka Street, the aggressor ordered the woman to move to the passenger seat, while he sat behind the wheel. The injured woman managed to escape. She notified the police about the attack.

The duty officer at the Municipal Police Headquarters passed information about the incident to the patrols on duty. One of them spotted the wanted vehicle in Goduszyn. The driver did not respond to the audible and flashing signals. The car was traveling at a very high speed.

The police began chasing the stolen vehicle. While driving, the driver committed numerous traffic violations, thereby endangering the lives and health of other road users. At the intersection of Wolności and Wojska Polskiego streets, while heading toward the city center, he struck a man at a pedestrian crossing. The man died at the scene.

Despite this, the driver did not stop. He drove the wrong way along the city streets and caused a traffic collision on Sudecka Street—he collided head-on with a Skoda. He then abandoned the car and began fleeing on foot. Shortly afterward, he was detained and subdued by officers.

The 18-year-old was taken into police custody. He was sober, but it cannot be ruled out that he may have been under the influence of intoxicants. For this purpose, blood was taken from him for testing.

The young man faces up to 15 years in prison.
