On 24 November, the Lubin police and an addiction therapy specialist and psychotherapist joined the addiction-prevention activities organized by the Helios cinema in Lubin and Gazeta Wyborcza.
Addiction and its impact on young people’s lives, as well as the question of whether it is possible to overcome an addiction on one’s own, were the main topics of the meeting. Students from five lower- and upper-secondary schools in Lubin and Polkowice counties took part in the debate. After watching “Amy,” the true story of singer Amy Winehouse, who was addicted to alcohol and drugs, the young people could ask questions and discuss addiction, as well as the effects of taking drugs and drinking alcohol. The legal consequences of possessing, trading, producing or dealing in these substances were also discussed.
The prevention activities are very important for young people because real-life stories and meetings with people who deal with human tragedies caused by addiction every day make a stronger impression on them and raise awareness of what using intoxicating and psychoactive substances or alcohol can lead to, as well as how difficult it is to overcome such an addiction on one’s own. They also show how insidious this disease is.
