The work was carried out as part of the “Asbestos Removal Programme in the Legnica Municipality”. It covered the properties of 19 private individuals in the Piekary and Przybków areas who joined the programme. One of the properties from which asbestos was removed belongs to the municipality. The work included dismantling—mainly sheets from roofs and façades—or collecting asbestos-containing products, as well as their transport and disposal. In accordance with the contract, the work began in March and was completed in autumn.
“We previously carried out asbestos removal with the participation of the Wrocław Voivodeship Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in 2011 and 2012. At that time, more than 13 tonnes were removed from municipal properties and properties belonging to the Municipal Housing Management Authority,” city officials say.
The programme was developed in 2009 and adopted by the City Council in 2010. The inventory conducted at that time showed that 382.5 tonnes of asbestos were present in the city. There are currently 350 tonnes. In this respect, we are in a much more favourable position than other large cities.
The inventory also showed that private individuals own 90% of the buildings containing asbestos materials. They are also beneficiaries of municipal funding. The funding does not cover the reconstruction of roof coverings or façades, nor the securing of roof structures until new coverings are installed.
