Independence Roundabout will be passable for vehicles travelling straight ahead. When leaving Mazowiecka Street, drivers will be able to make a U-turn at the roundabout to head towards the city centre.

At the same time, both carriageways of Sikorskiego Street will be closed to traffic on the section from Independence Roundabout to the intersection with Iwaszkiewicza Street, including the intersection itself. The Municipal Transport Company will put up information for passengers at stops about changes to bus services.

The road foundation at Independence Roundabout was reinforced and kerbs were installed. New paving-block surfaces were laid on the pavements. The traffic lights were expanded as part of the integrated traffic and public transport management system.

There were some surprises along the way. “It turned out that the road subsoil was clayey and too weak for the purposes we had planned,” said Andrzej Szymkowiak, director of the Municipal Roads Authority. “Reinforcement was necessary. But to carry this out, a new technology had to be developed, which was very time-consuming.”

A modern and important solution for Piekary’s transport system will be the construction of a turbo roundabout at the intersection of Sikorskiego and Iwaszkiewicza streets. An additional traffic lane will be built here for vehicles turning right from Sikorskiego Street into Iwaszkiewicza Street. The road, pavements and bicycle paths will be reconstructed.

As part of this project, a new bus stop will be built just beyond the intersection of Sikorskiego and Iwaszkiewicza streets, in the direction of Wrocławska Street. Meanwhile, the bus bay on Sikorskiego, opposite the church, will be thoroughly modernised. The stop on Sikorskiego Street before the intersection with Wrocławska Street will be removed.
