In poor visibility, when a pedestrian is wearing dark clothing and has no reflective elements, a driver will see them from a distance of only 20–30 metres. If the pedestrian is equipped with a reflective element that reflects a car’s headlights, the driver will notice them from a distance of 150–300 metres.

Using reflective elements in the form of pendants, bands, vests, harnesses, key rings, stickers and brightly coloured umbrellas significantly improves our visibility. However, we must remember to place them where they are visible to a driver approaching from either direction, from behind and from the front.

Since 31 August of last year, all pedestrians, regardless of age, have been required to use reflective elements when travelling on a road after dark if they are outside a built-up area. An exception to this rule applies when travelling on a pedestrian road, pavement or in a residential zone.

Failure to equip a pedestrian with reflective elements constitutes an offence under Article 97 of the Code of Petty Offences and is punishable by a fine of PLN 20 to PLN 3,000 or a reprimand; in simplified proceedings, the fine ranges from PLN 20 to PLN 100.
