For some time now, the Istotne.pl portal has been following more closely what is happening in other Lower Silesian cities. We noted, among other things, that self-defense courses for women are regularly held in two of them – Jelenia Góra and Lubin.
In Jelenia Góra, the course is called “Safe in Her Own City.” And as podinsp. Edyta Bagrowska, spokesperson for the Jelenia Góra police, told us, it is extremely popular. “As soon as one edition ends, the women call us asking when the next one will be,” the police officer says. “Many women take part in every course.”
“Safe in Her Own City” is an initiative of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Jelenia Góra. Course participants do not pay anything for it, and police officers conduct the classes as part of their official duties. What is more, the campaign is supported, among others, by the City of Jelenia Góra, which provides a room free of charge, while the mayor himself, Marcin Zawiła, has taken honorary patronage over the campaign.
The course is so popular that the police organize it twice a year. Its eleventh edition is currently underway. Over that time, hundreds of women have taken part in the classes.
What does it look like in Bolesławiec? As we managed to establish, the Bolesławiec police have organized such a course before, but that was years ago. In 2010, this type of class was organized at the II General Secondary School by Mirosław Sakowski, the school’s headmaster. “It was my idea,” the head of the “two” recalls in a conversation with “ii.” At the time, the women were taught self-defense by the accomplished judoka Edward Spraski.
“Recently, I met one of the women who took part in this course. She told me that she would gladly sign up for such classes again,” M. Sakowski added, assuring us that the next edition of the course will begin at II LO in November this year.
Is such a course needed in Bolesławiec? Dear ladies, do you feel safe in your city?
