The lecture is organized by: the Bolesławiec City Office, the Orzeł Cultural Integration Centre, the Szare Szeregi ZHP Scout District Headquarters, the Association of Lviv and South-Eastern Borderlands Enthusiasts, and the Agora Bookshop.

During the meeting, the DSH book stand will be open, offering several dozen books (monographs and historical studies, memoirs, reportage, works of fiction, guidebooks and albums) concerning the cultural and historical heritage of the Borderlands, individual towns and regions (the Vilnius, Grodno and Navahrudak regions, Polesia, Volhynia, Podolia, Pokuttya and the Lviv Land), as well as publications devoted to Polish-Ukrainian relations in the 20th century.

We particularly recommend a new album by Tomasz Kuba Kozłowski and Danuta Błahut-Biegańska, “The Great War in the East 1914–1919. From the Baltic to the Carpathians.” The album presents the First World War in the former eastern lands of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, in the territories of present-day Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus and Ukraine. This bilingual (Polish-English) publication includes 215 original illustrations (over one hundred of them previously unpublished), historical texts, excerpts from soldiers’ correspondence and memoirs, a chronology of events, indexes of geographical names and personal names, as well as photographers, painters, draughtsmen and postcard publishers, and maps of Europe on the endpapers.

History

In May 1911, four of the first scout troops in the Polish lands were established in Lviv by a daily order. This date is symbolically regarded as the beginning of Polish scouting. It is commonly associated exclusively with the name of Andrzej Małkowski. Decades of post-war erasure of the heritage and history of the eastern lands of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth have meant that the role of the city of Lviv and the entire group of Lviv instructors in the history of the scouting and Polish scouting movements is rarely recalled. The presentation will be illustrated with original period imagery.
An additional attraction will be an auction of an original issue of the famous magazine “Skaut,” published in Lviv more than a hundred years ago. The proceeds will support funds raised by the Bolesławiec branch of the Association of Lviv and South-Eastern Borderlands Enthusiasts to help Poles in the Borderlands.
