The organisers will then ask participants to bring in the giants so that they can be weighed publicly. Danuta Smolna, the village head of Stara Rudna, showed off her specimens. The heaviest weighs 51 kg and is more than half a metre in diameter. Its circumference exceeds one metre. “The seeds came from the Botanical Garden, from specially selected plants whose fruit weighed well over 100 kg. And on top of that, there is water and good soil. Pumpkins like a lot of fertiliser,” she reveals about the secrets of cultivation.

“For now, we ask you not to pick the pumpkins,” say the organisers. The competition will be decided on 7 November (Saturday) at 4:00 p.m.. Only then will the competition committee publicly weigh the pumpkins delivered. The owner of the heaviest pumpkin will win a free weekend stay at the Interferie Sport Hotel Bornit in Szklarska Poręba.

The heaviest pumpkin in Poland, grown last year, weighed… 598 kg. Its owner brought it to the Pumpkin Festival organised by Wrocław’s Botanical Garden.

More information about the competition and photos of giant pumpkins can be found on the Rudna Municipality website.
