A pneumococcus is a bacterium with what is known as high virulence, which has recently been increasing its resistance to various groups of antibiotics. Pneumococcal infections cause invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), which can be particularly severe in children under 5 years of age. The disease is systemic, most often resulting from haematogenous spread, poses a threat to life and can take the form of sepsis, meningitis, invasive pneumonia with bacteraemia, arthritis, osteomyelitis, endocarditis or peritonitis, all of which can be difficult to treat.
According to data from the World Health Organization, approximately 14.5 million children under 5 years of age worldwide develop invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) each year, and nearly 1 million children aged 1 to 59 months die from it annually. The highest incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in children occurs between 0 and 2 years of age; in Poland, it is 19 per 100,000. Infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae are also the leading cause of death among children under 5 years of age from infections that can be prevented through vaccination.
