The hunters were informed about the incident by a resident of Bolesławiec – Mrs Justyna, who was walking her dog in the area.

“The day before, I saw roe deer in this area,” the resident recounted. “We also often see hares here. But it had never happened before that two wild boar could be found in one of the uncovered channels. The incident probably would not have occurred if it had not been for looters who stole the cast-iron covers from the settling tanks.”

However, the shaft was too deep for the animals to get out on their own. Hunters from the Cyranka Hunting Club in Bolesławiec were called to the rescue; the area adjoining the abandoned plant lies within their hunting district.

“It is the first time we have rescued a wild boar from such a trap,” said one of the hunters, Feliks Janiec, the gamekeeper of the Cyranka Hunting Club Feliks Janiec, who also arrived at the rescue site. “Usually, we free animals from snares, very often near the motorway.”

Using ropes, the hunters skillfully pulled the animals out, after which the wild boar hurried toward a nearby grove.

Mrs Justyna witnessed the incident: “It is an unusual experience to see wild boar from such a short distance. I admit that I thought these animals would be aggressive after leaving the shaft and would attack the hunters, but they appreciated their freedom more than the presence of people.”

“I think we will appreciate Mrs Justyna’s involvement and sense of duty, as well as the fact that she notified us about the situation,” said one of the hunters.
