What is shockwave therapy?

It is a modern physiotherapy treatment. Physiotherapy, in turn, is one of the methods used in physical therapy. Physical therapy treatments involve using stimuli such as heat, cold, light radiation, water, magnetic fields, electricity and others. Shockwave therapy uses acoustic energy – impulses are delivered to the tissues being treated.

What does the treatment involve?

The patient assumes a comfortable position, and gel is then applied to the area being treated to enable the impulses to penetrate deep into the tissues. The therapist selects the appropriate treatment parameters and then introduces the shockwave into the body using a head moved over the areas being treated. The wave penetrates to a depth of 2 cm to 6 cm.

Is the treatment painful?

The therapist selects the parameters and method of performing the treatment so that it is painless. For people with a low pain threshold, all treatment parameters are adjusted to minimise discomfort to a level that is easily tolerated. The devices used to perform the treatments offer options that make it possible to achieve a similar therapeutic effect in several ways.

How long does the treatment take?

If the aim is pain relief, the treatment lasts 5–10 minutes. In aesthetic medicine, where the aim may be, for example, to reduce fatty tissue, stimulate tissue to produce collagen, or firm the skin and subcutaneous tissue, the treatment may take up to 30 minutes. After an initial interview and examination of the patient, the therapist provides an approximate number and duration of treatments.

  • How will I know whether I can safely undergo this treatment?

Before beginning the treatment, the therapist informs the prospective patient about contraindications and conducts a detailed interview aimed at ruling out contraindications to the treatment. This is a mandatory procedure at our facility, and every physiotherapist performing shockwave therapy is thoroughly trained and competent in this regard. We believe that it is not only the device used for the treatments that matters, but above all the person operating it – their knowledge, experience, skill and kindness.
