The elderly people called by the scammers remained very vigilant and did not hand over any money. The scammers called and pretended to be a police officer, giving his first and last name and attempting to extort money to help a person allegedly injured in a road accident. However, those whom the scammers called did not allow this to happen, verifying with the duty officer at the Municipal Police Headquarters in Jelenia Góra the police officer’s identity and whether such an accident had actually occurred.

The scammers talk about road accidents in which the victims are relatives of elderly people. They inform them that the only way to resolve the matter and avoid liability is... to hand over money through a courier from the police or prosecutor’s office. The police appeal: do not believe such people and under no circumstances hand over any money to them.

Police officers remind us that the grandchild, police officer, prosecutor’s office employee, and employees of institutions such as MOPS or ZUS methods are still used by scammers to extort money from gullible and trusting people.

Let us remember:

  • police officers and other people working in state or local-government institutions do not make such calls and do not encourage anyone to hand over money
  • scammers have no scruples or conscience, and their victims are elderly, lonely, ill people who need contact with their loved ones
  • you should not provide any information over the phone concerning your home or your savings
  • do not say over the phone when you are at home or whom you live with
  • do not let people you do not know into your home
  • do not hand over cash or other items to strangers.
  • if such a situation happens to us, let us call the police! Let us not give scammers a chance!
