Police officers from the Economic Crime Department of the Jelenia Góra Municipal Police Headquarters uncovered a scheme in which parents extorted school scholarships to the detriment of the City of Jelenia Góra.
The case currently involves as many as 52 suspects, most of whom were charged with fraud and using a forged document. In many cases, verdicts have already been issued (these individuals voluntarily submitted to punishment). Police officers have been conducting the investigation since last year.
The scheme involved awarding school scholarships to parents who met the formal requirements, for the purchase of school supplies or sportswear. The scholarships—ranging from PLN 548 to PLN 822—were paid after receipts and invoices documenting the purchases were submitted. Officers established that the documents were false and the purchases fictitious. The losses incurred by the city authorities amount to several dozen thousand złoty. The investigation is ongoing.
In addition, two women from Jelenia Góra, aged 43 and 54, were also charged in the case. One of them issued false receipts and invoices free of charge or for a small fee, while the other sold stamped blank invoices.
