At the scene, officers found a wrecked Opel passenger car lying in a ditch, as well as a married couple who were reportedly travelling in the vehicle.

The 25-year-old woman told the police that she had been driving the car, while her husband was sitting beside her in the passenger seat. At one point, she veered into a ditch and the car rolled over. No one was injured. The couple returned home.

During further proceedings, officers established that the situation had been entirely different. The vehicle had been driven by the woman’s 35-year-old husband, who was probably drunk. His wife had been… at home. The man lost control of the Opel, veered into a ditch and rolled over. After getting out of the car, he called his wife, who came to the scene and lied to the officers.

The man was arrested at his place of residence. He was still drunk. He had more than 2 per mille of alcohol in his system. It also emerged that he had been driving despite the starosta having withdrawn his driving licence (this is now a criminal offence).

The 35-year-old faces up to 2 years in prison, while the 25-year-old could face as many as five years behind bars.
