Playing in the regional league, Chrobry Nowogrodziec lost to second-division Ruch Chorzów in the first round of the Polish Cup. Earlier, in the preliminary round, the players from Nowogrodziec recorded a sensational 2–1 victory over third-division Arka Nowa Sól. The Chrobry–Ruch match took place on Wednesday at the stadium in Nowogrodziec. Chrobry started the match without any inferiority complex. In the opening minutes, Marcin Jankowski and Marcin Potyszka threatened the visitors’ goal. The remainder of the match belonged to Ruch’s players. The second-division side was in no great hurry to build attacks. The ball moved freely between the players from Silesia. In the final quarter of the first half, Krzysztof Lechowski took a shot at Ruch’s goal. The score was 0–0 at half-time.
In the 47th minute, Chorzów scored the opening goal. Tomasz Sokołowski made use of a pass from Grzegorz Bonek and beat the home goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Chrobry’s Marcin Jankowski had another opportunity to score. In the 52nd minute, Ruch led 2–0. Tomasz Sokołowski scored again. Chrobry responded with an attack in which Krystian Sendra passed to Zdzisław Wiśniowiecki. The latter’s shot was off target, however. In the 59th minute, Piotr Ćwielong increased the lead to 3–0. Two minutes later, it was already 4–0. Wojciech Grzyb entered his name on the scoresheet. Wojciech Mysior set the final score in the 66th minute. Following a corner, the Ruch player headed the ball into Chrobry’s goal. Chrobry Nowogrodziec lost 0–5 to Ruch Chorzów and thus ended its participation in the Polish Cup.
The arrival of the second-division team from Chorzów was a major event for the residents of Nowogrodziec. The attendance at the match—packed stands—testified to this. Several dozen Ruch Chorzów supporters also came to Nowogrodziec. During the match, they were joined by a group of supporters from Bolesławiec (the BKS Supporters’ Club, a fan club of first-division Zagłębie Lubin). Considerable police forces were deployed around the stadium. Police vans could also be seen at intersections in Nowogrodziec.
