How could a sewing machine have ended up in this square? “It is a trace of our city’s past,” says renowned Legnica archaeologist Witold Łaszewski. “It was valuable equipment, so perhaps its owners buried the machine in the ground to hide it from the approaching Red Army and then return for it? In any case, quite a lot of reminders of the past are being discovered in our city.”
The soil in Legnica still conceals many secrets. Last year, a very well-preserved tunnel was discovered during work on Skarbka Street. Old wells were found during earthworks in the Market Square and in the courtyard of the Academy of Knights. Cellars of pre-war tenement houses are also uncovered quite frequently. Various objects are found as well. This shows that Legnica is a city of great archaeological interest. Unusual discoveries also occur. For example, during work on Jaworzyńska Street, workers found live fish in a sewer pipe.
Returning to the machine, the excavator operator who unearthed it has made other discoveries as well. In Środa Śląska, at the construction site of a monument, he found a bottle in the ground containing the foundation document of another monument.
