On Saturday, 2 May, we will celebrate for the eleventh time one of our youngest national holidays—the Day of the Flag of the Republic of Poland.
Since 2007, the City of Zgorzelec has conducted a national-flag distribution campaign, under which 2,500 flags have already been handed out to residents. This time as well, Mayor Rafał Gronicz has prepared 500 flags—national, city and European Union flags. They will be available from the mayor during the City Picnic from 4:30 p.m. (while supplies last) at the Rev. J. Popiełuszko Square.
We remind and encourage the residents of Zgorzelec to display the national flag on their houses, balconies and in their windows. In this way, let us express our patriotism and respect for our independence, and promote knowledge about Polish identity and national symbols.
Established in 2004 by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, the holiday is intended to promote knowledge about Polish identity and national symbols. The Act amending the Act on the emblem, colours and anthem of the Republic of Poland, signed by the President of the Republic of Poland on 16 March 2004, specifies that the colours of the Republic of Poland are white and red. On flags, they are arranged in two horizontal, parallel stripes of equal width. The upper stripe is white and the lower stripe is red.
Poland is not the only country to celebrate such a holiday
National Flag Day is celebrated in many countries, including the United States, Russia, Sweden and Estonia. Buildings are most often decorated with flags on this day. In Poland, many people still approach displaying flags on balconies or in windows with some reserve. However, every year more people want to express their patriotism in this way and emphasise their bond with their own country.
