Jan Peszek:
As I ran the tape of my life through my memory, I decided that the best approach would be to address these round numbers in theatrical form, right there on the stage. As it happens, several of my anniversaries fall this year: my 70th birthday, 50 years of artistic work, 30 years of teaching, 45 years of marriage, as well as anniversaries connected with performing plays by Bogusław Schaeffer: the 40th anniversary of “The Quartet,” the 38th anniversary of “A Script for a Nonexistent Yet Possible Instrumental Actor,” and the 27th anniversary of “A Script for Three Actors”—nearly 300 years in total.
The evening “Jan Peszek. Double Solo” consists of Bogusław Schaeffer’s cult “A Script for a Nonexistent Yet Possible Instrumental Actor,” performed for 38 years, and the premiere of a new solo, “A Further Singing. An Autobiography,” which is a mature artist’s attempt to address fragments of his biography retrieved from the distant past. A biography that, beyond conscious awareness, shaped his life choices and ultimately the path chosen by an independent artist.
Jan Peszek sings these fragments along with Glenn Gould singing Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Goldberg Variations,” thereby realizing and developing Gould’s cherished ideal of the listener-creator, who co-creates art in the process of receiving it.
