When the police officers arrived, a 57-year-old woman opened the door and stated that the reason she had called the police was that her common-law partner... would not give her money for alcohol. However, she had already reached an agreement with him and no longer needed help. Nevertheless, the officers asked to be allowed into the apartment.

They found the woman's 45-year-old common-law partner there, as well as... hundreds of letters and other postal items scattered throughout the room. The woman and the man stated that they worked for a postal company and that the items were to be delivered the following day.

The officers secured all the correspondence found in the apartment. These were undelivered items from 2013–2015. Some of the letters had been opened. Some were stained with animal excrement. There were also signed acknowledgments of receipt for the correspondence.

Both common-law partners may now face a sentence of up to two years in prison.
