Małgorzata Et Ber Warlikowska titled her exhibition “Zip Society.” What does this enigmatic title mean? “In a literal translation, it means something like the society of a zip fastener,” the artist explains.
“I wanted to talk about relationships shaped according to the principle of a zip fastener, where everyone fits together and everyone has their place—the one who works and the one who does not work, the good and the bad; everyone is part of this arrangement. On the one hand, it is positive; on the other, we are all deeply rooted in certain situations,” the artist adds.
Reality as inspiration
Małgorzata Et Ber Warlikowska’s works are deeply rooted in the present day. The artist does not hide the fact that mass media, among other things, have a major influence on the subjects of her works. Her graphics and sculptures often reflect reality, refer to current events and depict specific social situations. “I saw people addicted to the Internet, completely torn away from normal life, and that is where the story about the chat came from,” she says.
Almost all of Małgorzata Et Ber Warlikowska’s works refer to the mass media, especially newspapers. This is connected with the artist’s unusual hobby. “I collect tabloids from around the world, real trash newspapers, which is why there are so many fragments cut from such newspapers and printed in linoleum or applied to ceramics.”
The exhibition was organized at the BOK gallery. It can be visited until September 19.
