Laureate Wojciech Bieleń is a first-year student. He is not yet 17. He lives in Lubin, but chose a school in our city. He has been helping others for eight years—half his life. How did you start? “In the second grade of primary school, my catechist persuaded me to take part in various collections,” he recalls. “Now I work with Caritas. I work with children. I help them with their homework and lead games and activities. During the summer holidays, I go with them to camps, and during the winter break, I organize their free time. Since becoming a student at a school in Legnica, I have also started helping others here,” Wojciech adds. What does helping others mean to him? “It is an unconditional reflex,” he says with a smile. “Giving yourself to someone and bringing joy is very beautiful.
The city-level eliminations of the “Eight Wonderful Ones” competition were organized by the Youth Cultural Centre together with the City Office. Twelve candidates were nominated. The committee, chaired by Legnica Deputy Mayor Dorota Purgal, spent several hours analyzing the documentation and conducting interviews with the candidates.
“This year’s competition was very closely contested, and it was very difficult to choose the laureates,” said Dorota Purgal. “By taking part in this edition, you proved that you are the best in Legnica. Your enthusiasm for volunteering is an encouragement to others. Congratulations on your achievements.”
Ultimately, the prestigious group of Legnica’s “Eight Wonderful Ones” included: Karolina Jeżewska from the Economic Schools Complex, Aleksandra Grochowska from Lower Secondary School No. 5, Wiktoria Zelek from General Education Schools Complex No. 2, and Piotr Semanyszyn from the 5th General Secondary School.
