We return to the case. The District Court in Legnica ordered three months of pre-trial detention for a 42-year-old resident of Legnica suspected of repeatedly holding his seven-month-old son out of a third-floor window with the intention of taking his life, threatening to drop him. The man’s behaviour indicated that he might have been under the influence of drugs (we wrote about this in the article He threatened to throw a baby out of a window).
The intervention took place after, shortly before 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Legnica police officers received information about an argument between a woman and a man in an apartment in the city centre. Hearing screams coming from the apartment—and with no one opening the door—the officers entered by forcing it open. Inside, they found a man sitting on the windowsill with a child in his arms. Every so often, the man held the child outside, threatening to let him go.
While some officers spoke with him, others secured the area in the street below the window to prevent a tragedy. After several minutes of negotiations, the officers managed to persuade the man to hand the child over to his mother. A doctor examined the boy and, fortunately, found no injuries.
The detained man’s blood was taken for testing for the presence of intoxicating substances in his system, as his behaviour indicated that he might have been under the influence of drugs, and such substances were found in the apartment. The detained man was charged with attempted murder and drug possession. For the acts of which he is suspected, he could now face life imprisonment.
