The incident took place during the night of February 18–19 in Rudna municipality. The police duty officer received a report that one of the municipality’s residents was abusing his dog.

When officers arrived at the 31-year-old’s property, he lied that he did not have a dog at all. The officers did not believe him and searched the property. In one of the rooms, they found a bloodied dog hidden under a quilt.

The 31-year-old was taken into police custody. At the time of his arrest, he had nearly two per mille of alcohol in his system.

Police established that the detained man had struck the dog on the head several times with a shovel. A veterinarian found that the animal had head contusions and an injured eye. The dog was also exhausted and starving.

The 31-year-old explained to the officers that he had tried to kill the pet because he could not afford to keep it. The suspect faces up to two years in prison.
