The exhibition presents works by four artists: Dorota Cychowska, Joanna Teper and Krzysztof Rozpondek from Wrocław, as well as Jadwiga Janina Sarzyńska from Bolesławiec. The gallery has been divided into two sections: the sphere of corporeality and the forms of ceramic works created in clay, and the metaphysical section of the art of concrete geometry.
“In form, identifying gender is not difficult. Hardness, strength, massiveness, sharpness and roughness are masculine attributes of form. Delicacy, softness, lightness and smoothness are feminine forms. Searching for gender in the functioning of art must take place on a deeper level,” explains the exhibition curator, Grażyna Ferensowicz.
The “Does Art Have a Gender?” exhibition is provocative. It encourages visitors to change the way they look at art. It forces them to move beyond the canon and the established convention of reception—not only of art, but also of sexuality. The exhibition is popular; every day it is visited by students from secondary schools in Bolesławiec.
The artists’ works will be on display until the end of March at the Gallery of the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre on Piłsudski Square. Admission is free.
