The cooperation agreement for its implementation between the Polish Athletics Association and the Zgorzelec City Municipality was signed today by Mayor Rafał Gronicz.
“Athletics as a Sport for Everyone” is an innovative programme created by athletics specialists, managers and coaches. Its aim is, on the one hand, to popularise athletics among children and young people and, on the other, to improve the qualifications of teachers and coaches in one of the oldest sports.
The programme promoting the Queen of Sports among children and young people, launched in Poland in September this year, forms part of the unique global athletics project IAAF Kids’ Athletics, which has been operating since 2005. It has already reached more than 1.5 million children in over 160 countries worldwide! Since 2012, Nestle has been the global partner of this initiative. In April, the Polish Athletics Association signed a cooperation agreement with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) concerning its implementation in our country.
The “Athletics as a Sport for Everyone” programme will cover children and young people:
- from the youngest primary school classes (I–III)
- children from classes IV–VI
- students of lower-secondary schools.
The idea behind both the pilot programme, which will be implemented in Zgorzelec schools, and its subsequent continuation is to prepare a training structure for children and young people that takes into account the selection of exercises appropriate to the course of ontogenetic development, assessment of general and athletic fitness, management of the selection and recruitment process, proper organisation of activities, involvement of families and the school community in carrying out the project’s tasks, and improving the qualifications of athletics teachers and coaches.
Zgorzelec is also the smallest of the centres invited to cooperate in implementing the programme, recognising in this way the commitment, skills and successes of our young athletes, as well as the efforts of the coaching staff.
