“Gazeta Wrocławska” published an article on 13 November 2014, by Katarzyna Gęsiarz, titled “Lower Silesian leaders in EU support”. The editorial team prepared the ranking based on data from the Marshal’s Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, presenting the value of EU assistance used, originating from the European Regional Development Fund, per resident (according to Statistics Poland data). The data concern funds obtained for investment purposes under the Regional Operational Programme.

“The cities of Wrocław, Legnica and Jelenia Góra, as well as Kłodzko and Lubań counties, managed to obtain the most EU funds,” the author writes. The presented ranking shows that between 2007 and 2013 Legnica obtained PLN 1,623 per resident, Wrocław PLN 1,445, and Jelenia Góra PLN 1,889.

The most important investment projects completed in Legnica with EU support include: the reconstruction of Gniewomierska Street as the first stage of constructing the south-eastern bypass; the comprehensive renewal of degraded urban areas around B. Chrobrego and H. Pobożnego streets; the reconstruction of Bydgoska and Szczytnicka streets; the construction of a modern video-surveillance system; the purchase of environmentally friendly and modern buses for public transport; the construction of a municipal waste sorting plant; the regulation of water and wastewater management in the Legnica agglomeration; and the construction of an integrated traffic and public transport management system in the city.

This is good news for residents. The city made good and professional use of the opportunities to obtain EU funds for important projects between 2007 and 2013. It proved that it can do so, and the experience gained will certainly be used in the next EU budgetary period.
