Artists settled far from the hustle and bustle of civilization in order to create in peace, to be closer to nature, closer to one another... The vast majority of them are individualists who have never created anything resembling a commune, as many outside observers seem to think. Each of them found their place on the vast map of these lands, their own patch of land, which they gradually made their own. However, they took on the effort of joint activities, creating interesting events that brought together people from the cultural sphere and reached out to the local community.

They undertake such initiatives today as well, and the exhibition is one of them.

This is an annual review of works by artists belonging to the Nowy Młyn Artistic Colony Association, based in Szklarska Poręba. And the line-up of these artists is truly impressive. Although the Association is based in Szklarska Poręba, its members live in many other towns and villages: Przesieka, Karpacz, Jelenia Góra and Kopaniec. What we will see at the upcoming exhibition is absolutely unique: it will present exactly what the artists living right next door to us are creating here and now. These are works that reflect the current condition of “our” artists’ colony. A real treat for everyone!

The Nowy Młyn Association began its activity in 2005 at the Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann House. It was established through a joint initiative of artists living in Szklarska Poręba, Kopaniec, Przesieka and Jelenia Góra. The group focuses on promoting artists living in the Karkonosze, the Izera Mountains and the Jelenia Góra Valley, while also supporting the development of cultural tourism and creating a strong group of people who want to have a say in the future of the places where they live.

The Association’s name refers to the Mill of Saint Luke, the traditional headquarters of the Association of Artistic Creators of Saint Luke in Szklarska Poręba, which operated here in the 1920s and 1930s, thus emphasizing the continuation of these activities.

Exhibition opening: 15 November 2014, 5:00 p.m.
Artystyczna Galeria Izerska, Kromnów 47 B.
