The columbarium is being built along the cemetery’s main road, where an old, deteriorated wall once stood, formerly enclosing the old cemetery. The wall has now been partially dismantled. A new structure is being erected. As Józef Wasinkiewicz, president of Legnickie Przedsiębiorstwo Gospodarki Komunalnej, reports, the investment has been divided into two stages. The first will be completed this year. At that point, 110 niches for urns will be ready. Once the second stage is completed (in the middle of next year), another 68 spaces will be added.
The old epitaphs were removed from the wall on which the columbarium is being built. They will be displayed in the memorial section. A place where funeral ceremonies will be held will also be created next to the columbarium.
It is worth noting that columbaria are becoming an increasingly popular place of burial. The new necropolis in Jaszków, Legnica, also has such a facility, with around one thousand niches.
